Man Faces Multiple Traffic Offenses After Fleeing Law Enforcement

W. Scott Hanken, Attorney at Law Team

When Illinois drivers are accused of committing a traffic offense, the situation can quickly spiral out of control if they make the mistake of fleeing from law enforcement. What might have been a simple stop due to a broken taillight, a lane violation or some other relatively minor infraction can suddenly escalate to myriad allegations such as speeding, running a red light or stop sign, reckless driving and fleeing law enforcement.

There can even be an auto accident causing injuries. Traffic violations can result in lost driving privileges, fines and even jail time if the transgressions are sufficiently serious.

Man flees traffic stop and crashes vehicle

A 23-year-old man was seriously injured when he crashed his vehicle after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop and driving recklessly. The man was driving a minivan and was reportedly speeding, driving above the 55-mph speed limit. When a law enforcement officer tried to make the traffic stop, the driver is said to have fled. The officer said he saw the driver as he navigated his vehicle aggressively, passed other vehicles, and ran a four-way stop sign. He apparently ceased the pursuit out of concern for innocent bystanders.

A second law enforcement officer said he witnessed the vehicle as the driver allegedly driving on at a high speed. The reckless behavior continued and the driver ran through another intersection. At a bend in the road, the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and flipped a number of times. The man was seriously hurt and flown to the hospital for treatment. He is facing many charges on traffic violations including a felony for fleeing law enforcement.

Traffic offenses can be the catalyst for serious consequences

Drivers are advised to adhere to the law when behind the wheel. That means following the speed limit, driving safely, stopping at signals and following commands of law enforcement when a traffic stop is initiated. Still, drivers might make mistakes and fail to obey the law. Being convicted of some traffic violations can lead to a fine and points on the driver’s license.

Others can have potential penalties that are significantly more severe and result in a loss of driving privileges and even jail. Regardless of the situation, it is important to understand the value of a strong legal defense. A firm with experience traffic tickets and criminal defense may be able to help with a case.
