What Should I Know About Teens & Distracted Driving?

W. Scott Hanken, Attorney at Law Team

Teen drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents due to their inexperience behind the wheel. They’re also prone to distracted driving behaviors, including texting while driving, which greatly increases their accident risk. The Balance explains what you should know about teens and distracted driving so you can take the proper steps to prevent serious issues from occurring.

Acquainting young drivers with the possible consequences of their actions is a great way to illustrate just how serious this issue is. First and foremost, let your teen know that the risk of being involved in an accident is much higher when a person is driving distracted. Emphasize the fact that they may cause grave injuries to themselves and others, all because of a second of inattention. Additionally, there are many legal and financial implications of driving distractions.

Most states have laws in place that forbid distracted driving. People who break these laws are often subject to hefty fines, which can sometimes cost hundreds of dollars. Additionally, subsequent offenses incur even bigger fines, and at some point, a driver may lose his or her driving privileges altogether. Insurance rates will also go up when a driver is involved in an accident.

You should also outline strategies to prevent driving distractions in the first place. When it comes to texting while driving, drivers should silence mobile devices and store them away in the vehicle. If a teen does receive an urgent text, he or she should pull over to read the text and respond. Also, make sure your child understands there are other sorts of driving distractions to steer clear of. This includes conversations with passengers, eating while driving, and even daydreaming.
